In a bid to boost tourism and facilitate international business, the Canadian government has recently announced a significant relaxation of visa requirements for 13 countries. As a result, citizens of these countries will no longer need visas to visit Canada, opening up new opportunities for travel and economic growth.
The Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Sean Fraser, has made an exciting announcement regarding the expansion of the electronic travel authorization (eTA) program. Under the new guidelines, visitors from these 13 nations who have previously held a Canadian visa within the past 10 years or currently possess a valid United States non-immigrant visa can now apply for an eTA instead of a traditional visa when traveling to Canada by air.
The following countries are eligible for the visa waiver program:
- Antigua and Barbuda
- Argentina
- Costa Rica
- Morocco
- Panama
- Philippines
- St. Kitts and Nevis
- St. Lucia
- St. Vincent and the Grenadines
- Seychelles
- Thailand
- Trinidad and Tobago
- Uruguay
These countries have been granted the privilege to enter without a visa, allowing travelers to visit for tourism, business, or other specified purposes.
This development allows travelers from these countries to visit Canada for up to six months, whether for business purposes or leisure activities. The move is seen as a positive step towards enhancing Canada’s economy by promoting increased travel, tourism, and international business opportunities.
Mélanie Joly, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, expressed her enthusiasm for the expansion of the eTA program, particularly highlighting the importance of engaging with the Indo-Pacific region.
Joly emphasized, “Incorporating countries such as the Philippines into the eTA program is a significant aspect of our Indo-Pacific Strategy. We aim to enhance our involvement in the region, strengthen interpersonal connections, and facilitate more convenient, expedited, and secure travel to Canada for all individuals.”
It is worth noting that individuals who currently hold a valid visa can continue to use it for travel to Canada. However, those who are not eligible for an eTA or plan to enter Canada by means other than air, such as car, bus, train, or boat (including cruise ships), will still need to obtain a visitor visa.
This new visa waiver program is expected to alleviate the burden on Canada’s visa caseload by diverting thousands of applications. Consequently, the streamlined visa application process will benefit all visa applicants, leading to more efficient and effective visa processing.

Canada’s decision to implement visa-free travel for these 13 countries marks a significant milestone in enhancing global mobility and fostering stronger ties between nations. By simplifying entry procedures and encouraging international travel, Canada is positioning itself as an attractive destination for individuals seeking business opportunities, leisure experiences, and reconnections with family and friends.
