The journey of this groundbreaking odyssey began with the electric truck, entirely powered by solar energy, making its way from Switzerland to Chile via Rotterdam, traversing maritime cargo routes. Starting its expedition in the Atacama region, the vehicle geared up for the ambitious ascent from the Maricunga Salt Lake, nestled at an altitude of 3,400 meters (11,155 feet).

Revolutionizing Energy Sources:

Distinct from conventional fuel sources, the expedition vehicle was crafted from the adaptable Aebi VT450 transporter. Propelled by twin 120 kW electric motors and fortified by a 300 V nominal EcoVolta lithium-ion battery with a 90 kWh capacity, it showcased an impressive range of 200 km (124 miles).

Solar Integration at Its Zenith:

The crux of this unparalleled journey lay in the truck’s integration of solar capabilities. Leveraging power from four rooftop solar panels and an additional 16 panels dispersed on the ground, the vehicle generated a combined peak power of 370 W with a striking 22.5% cell efficiency. A robust charging infrastructure facilitated the transfer of solar energy back to the vehicle, supported by five solar charge controllers and a fail-safe DC-coupled charging system.
