Prime Minister Shabash Sharif’s Global Engagement at Paris Financing Tax Summit

Paris, June 23, 2023 – Prime Minister Shabash Sharif met with world leaders, including heads of state from various nations, as well as representatives from the United Nations and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), on the sidelines of the new Global Financing Tax Summit held in Paris.

The prime minister emphasized the challenges faced by developing nations, particularly in light of climate change. His visit to the French capital was prompted by an invitation from President Manuel Macron, and the two-day summit commenced today.

During the summit, Prime Minister Sharif held a bilateral meeting with President Macron, where he highlighted the issues faced by developing nations, such as the lack of available resources, the burden of interest payments on debts, and the need for sustainable development.

The prime minister underscored that the devastating impacts of climate change have further exacerbated the difficulties faced by these already vulnerable countries.

Expressing his appreciation for President Macron’s commitment to a financial system based on justice and fairness for developing countries, Prime Minister Sharif commended the bold steps taken by the French president.

Additionally, the prime minister had an opportunity to meet with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres. During their exchange, Prime Minister Sharif reiterated the immense strain that climate change has placed on developing nations, resulting in new challenges for achieving economic growth and maintaining fiscal balance.

Meanwhile, in Pakistan, the Supreme Court has requested the record of all individuals who were arrested in the country after the violent protests erupted on May 9th. The unrest followed the arrest of opposition leader Imran Khan, chairman of the Pedia party.

A recently constituted seven-member bench, which was previously a nine-member bench, resumed hearing petitions challenging the trial of civilians in military courts. However, Justice Issa expressed his reservations, stating that he did not consider this bench to be valid.

He also clarified that he could not participate in any bench until the case regarding the Supreme Court practicing procedures Bill 2023 is resolved. Justice Masood shared Justice Issa’s views on the matter.

In another development, Finance Minister Dar faced a journalist’s query regarding the possibility of a deal with the IMF. When reporter Shahid Qureshi sought a response to the government’s failure to sign the IMF deal, the finance minister became annoyed and pushed the reporter.

The incident occurred as the finance minister was leaving the National Assembly, where he had discussed the funds allocated for the flood-affected population and the cash assistance program.
