Pakistan’s Fuel Price Stability: Implications and Market Insights

Petrol and diesel prices in Pakistan have recently held steady, demonstrating stability as the caretaker government maintains existing rates for the upcoming fortnight. This decision, corroborated by the Finance Division and in line with recommendations from the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), presents petrol at Rs267.34 per litre and diesel at Rs276.21 per litre.

Current Fuel Rates January 1st 2024:

The recent adjustment saw Kerosene oil experiencing a slight decrease, now marked at Rs188.83 per litre following a reduction of Rs2.19. Conversely, Light Diesel Oil will be priced at Rs165.75, showing a marginal increase of Rs1.11 based on governmental directives.

Market Analysis:

Experts delving into the oil sector emphasize the sustained stability in global crude prices over the past two weeks. Furthermore, the dollar rate has maintained relative stability, with only minor fluctuations compared to the previous fortnight.

Import Reliance and Economic Impact:

Pakistan’s reliance on imported petroleum products remains significant, with over 70% of its demand being met through imports. This reliance is vividly portrayed in the country’s escalated petroleum group import bill, which witnessed a year-on-year rise of 5.76% in November 2023. The total reached $1.32 billion compared to $1.25 billion in the same period the previous year.

Significance in Import Bill:

Petroleum products constituted a substantial 29.76% of the total import bill during November 2023, underlining their pivotal role in Pakistan’s imports. Although the initial quarter of the fiscal year showcased reduced consumption due to escalating prices, subsequent quarters depicted stabilization and occasional reductions in petroleum prices. These fluctuations contributed to an upsurge in consumption by November of the same year.
